It uses the MAX7219 chip which has all sorts of Arduino example code. There are also CircuitPython drivers available for this chip. You can also install the built-in Arduino MAX7219 drivers which include some handy example code. These run best on 5 volts.
The circuit board is 82mm long by 15mm wide, the displays approximately 60mm by 13 mm.
Included are standard straight header pins as well as 90 degree angled pins which are quite handy.
